Zimbabwean dollar

The Zimbabwean dollar is a national currency first introduced in 1980, withdrawn after hyperinflation, and later reintroduced in several forms.

Rhodesian dollar: The currency used in Rhodesia before Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980. The new Zimbabwean dollar replaced this currency at independence.
Hyperinflation in Zimbabwe: The extreme rise in prices that devastated Zimbabwe’s economy, especially during the late 2000s. It eroded the dollar’s purchasing power until it was abandoned.
Zimbabwean hyperinflation banknotes: Banknotes issued in Zimbabwe during hyperinflation, including denominations reaching 100 trillion dollars. Their extraordinary face values became a visible emblem of the dollar’s collapse.
First Zimbabwean dollar: The currency issued from independence in 1980 until its replacement during the 2000s. It began as a comparatively stable currency before severe inflation transformed its value.
Zimbabwean independence: The end of minority rule and establishment of Zimbabwe as an independent state in 1980. The first Zimbabwean dollar was introduced with the new state.
Currency redenomination: The replacement of a currency’s units at a fixed conversion rate, often by removing zeros. Zimbabwe repeatedly redenominated the dollar as inflation made denominations unwieldy.
Dollarization: The adoption of a foreign currency as a major or official means of payment. Zimbabwe’s use of the US dollar and other currencies followed the local currency’s breakdown.
Second Zimbabwean dollar: The redenominated currency introduced in 2006 and used during the accelerating inflation of the late 2000s. It marked an early attempt to simplify denominations as prices surged.
Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe’s central bank, responsible for issuing currency and conducting monetary policy. It issued the dollar and managed the policies that shaped its successive forms.
Inflation: A sustained increase in the general price level that reduces money’s purchasing power. Persistent inflation weakened each version of the Zimbabwean dollar.
