Zinc sulfide

Zinc sulfide (ZnS) is an inorganic compound of zinc and sulfur. It occurs mainly as the minerals sphalerite and wurtzite and is used in phosphors, pigments, and optical materials.

Sphalerite: A cubic mineral form of zinc sulfide and the principal ore of zinc. Its cubic crystal structure is the common natural form of ZnS.
Photoluminescence: Light emission from a material after it absorbs photons. ZnS phosphors can emit visible light after excitation.
Phosphor: A material that emits light after absorbing energy, often from ultraviolet radiation or an electron beam. ZnS is a classic host material for phosphors.
Zinc ore: Rock or mineral material containing zinc in concentrations suitable for extraction. Natural ZnS deposits are among the world’s principal zinc ores.
Zinc oxide: An inorganic compound of zinc and oxygen with formula ZnO. It is a widely used zinc compound with oxide rather than sulfide chemistry.
Wurtzite: A hexagonal mineral form of zinc sulfide, also found in some other compounds. It is the hexagonal counterpart to cubic sphalerite.
Luminescence: Light emission by a substance through a process other than incandescence. ZnS emission belongs to this broader family of light-producing processes.
Zinc sulfide phosphor: A luminescent material made from zinc sulfide, often activated with metal impurities. Doped ZnS has been used in displays and luminous coatings.
Hydrothermal mineral deposit: A mineral concentration formed when heated, mineral-rich fluids move through rock and precipitate minerals. Hydrothermal fluids commonly deposit sphalerite.
Cadmium sulfide: An inorganic compound of cadmium and sulfur, used as a semiconductor and pigment. Its related II–VI semiconductor chemistry differs in toxicity and optical properties.
