Zuiderzee Works

The Zuiderzee Works are Dutch dams, drainage projects, and polders that enclosed parts of the former Zuiderzee and reclaimed land from it.

Afsluitdijk: A major Dutch causeway and dam that closed the Zuiderzee from the North Sea in 1932. Its closure transformed the tidal Zuiderzee into the freshwater IJsselmeer.
Cornelis Lely: A Dutch engineer and politician who developed the principal plan for enclosing and reclaiming the Zuiderzee. His 1891 plan became the technical and political blueprint for the works.
Noordoostpolder: A large Dutch polder reclaimed from the IJsselmeer and drained in 1942. It is one of the major agricultural landscapes created by the works.
Delta Works: A Dutch system of dams, barriers, and storm-surge defenses built mainly to protect the southwest from flooding. The later project addressed coastal flood risk through a different set of works.
IJsselmeer: A freshwater lake in the Netherlands, created when the Zuiderzee was enclosed by the Afsluitdijk. It became the controlled water body from which later polders were drained.
Zuiderzee Association: A Dutch organization founded in 1886 to study and promote plans for closing and reclaiming the Zuiderzee. Its investigations supplied evidence that helped turn Lely's proposal into policy.
Flevoland: A Dutch province formed largely from polders reclaimed from the IJsselmeer. Its towns and farms occupy land created by the reclamation program.
Markermeer: A shallow freshwater lake in the Netherlands, separated from the IJsselmeer by the Houtribdijk. The lake is a consequence of dividing the enclosed inland waters.
Polder: A tract of low-lying land enclosed by dikes, with water levels managed by pumping or drainage. Reclaimed areas became habitable land only through continuing control of water levels.
Zuiderzee Works Act: A Dutch law passed in 1918 authorizing the enclosure and reclamation of the Zuiderzee. The law enabled construction after years of debate and the 1916 flood.
