Zulu Kingdom

A nineteenth-century kingdom in southern Africa, founded by Shaka and centered in present-day KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Its military expansion and resistance to British rule reshaped the region.

Shaka: The Zulu king who expanded the kingdom in the early nineteenth century and became its most famous ruler. His leadership and military reforms established the kingdom’s power.
Zulu regiments: Age-based military and labor formations organized under Zulu royal authority. They provided the kingdom with a structured force for warfare and public service.
Anglo-Zulu War: The 1879 war between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. It ended in British victory and the kingdom’s territorial partition.
Zulu Partition: The division of Zulu territory into separate chiefdoms after the Anglo-Zulu War. Partition dismantled centralized royal power after Britain defeated the kingdom.
Dingiswayo: A Mthethwa leader who built a regional state and influenced Shaka’s rise. Shaka’s early career unfolded within the political order Dingiswayo had built.
Impi: A Zulu term for a military force or regiment, and by extension a Zulu army. The kingdom’s campaigns depended on assembling and directing impi.
Battle of Isandlwana: An 1879 battle in which Zulu forces destroyed a British invading column. It was the kingdom’s most celebrated battlefield victory in the war.
British annexation of Zululand: The British incorporation of Zululand into Natal in 1887. Annexation replaced the kingdom’s divided postwar status with direct colonial rule.
Mthethwa Empire: A regional polity in southeastern Africa whose power preceded the rise of the Zulu Kingdom. Its decline created opportunities for Zulu expansion.
Buffalo horns formation: A Zulu battle formation with a central force and two encircling wings. It helped Zulu commanders envelop opponents in major battles.
