Zuo Zhuan

The Zuo Zhuan is an ancient Chinese historical work that narrates events from 722 to 468 BCE alongside the Spring and Autumn Annals. It is traditionally attributed to Zuo Qiuming, though its authorship and composition remain disputed.

Spring and Autumn Annals: A terse chronicle of the state of Lu covering 722–481 BCE, traditionally attributed to Confucius. The Zuo Zhuan supplies extended narratives that explain and expand this chronicle’s entries.
Chinese annals: Chronological records that arrange events by year, often in concise entries. The Zuo Zhuan follows annalistic chronology while greatly enlarging its entries.
Zuo Qiuming: A figure traditionally identified as the author of the Zuo Zhuan and a contemporary of Confucius. The conventional attribution links the work to him, though historical evidence is uncertain.
Duke Huan of Qi: A seventh-century BCE ruler of Qi remembered as the first hegemon among the Spring and Autumn states. His rise illustrates the alliances and leadership contests narrated in the work.

Confucius: A Chinese teacher and thinker whose teachings became foundational to Confucian traditions. Later tradition connected the work’s interpretation of the annals with Confucius’s authority.
Battle of Chengpu: A major battle in 632 BCE between the states of Jin and Chu during the Spring and Autumn period. Its account showcases the work’s detailed treatment of strategy, diplomacy, and consequence.
Shiji: A history of early China and the Han dynasty compiled by Sima Qian around the first century BCE. Its biographical structure offers a later alternative to the Zuo Zhuan’s annal-based organization.
