Zuo Zongtang

Zuo Zongtang (1812–1885) was a Qing general and statesman who helped suppress the Taiping Rebellion and led the Qing reconquest of Xinjiang in the 1870s.

Dungan Revolt: A Muslim uprising in northwestern China that began in 1862 and spread across Shaanxi, Gansu, and Xinjiang. Its aftermath created the military crisis that Zuo’s Xinjiang campaign sought to resolve.
Lanzhou Arsenal: A Qing military workshop in Lanzhou that produced weapons and ammunition during the late nineteenth century. Zuo built up this arsenal to supply his northwestern campaigns.
Li Hongzhang: A Qing statesman and military leader who built regional armies and pursued diplomacy and modernization in the late nineteenth century. Li opposed Zuo’s costly Xinjiang campaign, favoring attention to maritime defense.
Xinjiang: A region in northwestern China whose name means “new frontier” in Chinese. Zuo’s campaign restored Qing administration across much of the region.
Yaqub Beg: A Central Asian ruler who established an independent state in Kashgar and surrounding parts of Xinjiang from 1865 to 1877. Zuo’s campaign dismantled Yaqub Beg’s state and restored Qing control.
Qing military logistics: The systems for transporting troops, food, weapons, and funds across the Qing Empire. Zuo’s slow, supply-led advance into Xinjiang relied on securing routes and provisions.
Zeng Guofan: A Qing statesman and general who organized the Xiang Army and helped defeat the Taiping Rebellion. Zeng’s patronage helped launch Zuo’s military career.
Xinjiang Province: The Qing province established in 1884 from territories formerly administered as a frontier region. The Qing formalized the recovery Zuo led by making Xinjiang a province.
Qing reconquest of Xinjiang: The Qing military campaign of 1876–1878 that recovered Xinjiang from Yaqub Beg’s forces. This was Zuo’s defining military achievement.
Foreign loans to the Qing dynasty: Borrowing from foreign banks and merchants by the Qing government to finance state expenses and military campaigns. Zuo advocated borrowing to fund the costly recovery of Xinjiang.
