1945 United Kingdom general election

The 1945 British general election gave the Labour Party a large House of Commons majority, ending Winston Churchill’s wartime coalition and bringing Clement Attlee to power.

Clement Attlee: British Labour politician who served as prime minister from 1945 to 1951. He became prime minister after Labour’s election victory.
First-past-the-post voting: An electoral system in which the candidate with the most votes wins each single-member constituency. It converted Labour’s national vote lead into a much larger parliamentary majority.
Winston Churchill: British prime minister who led the United Kingdom during most of the Second World War. He led the Conservatives into the election after heading the wartime coalition.
