1999 İzmit earthquake

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck northwestern Turkey on 17 August 1999. It ruptured the North Anatolian Fault and caused extensive deaths and damage.

North Anatolian Fault: A major right-lateral strike-slip fault system crossing northern Turkey between the Aegean region and eastern Anatolia. The earthquake ruptured a segment of this fault system.
1999 Düzce earthquake: A magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck northwestern Turkey on 12 November 1999. It followed the İzmit earthquake along the same fault system months later.
Gölcük: A city in Kocaeli Province, Turkey, on the eastern shore of the Sea of Marmara. Gölcük lay close to the rupture and suffered severe destruction.
