30S ribosomal subunit

The smaller subunit of bacterial ribosomes, composed of 16S ribosomal RNA and proteins. It binds messenger RNA and helps match its codons with transfer RNA anticodons during translation.

16S ribosomal RNA: The RNA scaffold and catalytic core of the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit. It forms the decoding center that checks codon–anticodon pairing.
Ribosomal protein S1: A large, flexible bacterial ribosomal protein that binds messenger RNA and assists translation initiation. It can help the 30S subunit engage transcripts with structured or weakly accessible initiation regions.
Streptomycin: An aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds the bacterial 30S subunit and disrupts translation accuracy. Its binding near the decoding center promotes errors in protein synthesis.
40S ribosomal subunit: The smaller subunit of eukaryotic cytosolic ribosomes, containing 18S ribosomal RNA and proteins. Its composition and initiation pathways differ from those of the bacterial 30S subunit.
Decoding center: The ribosomal region that monitors codon–anticodon pairing during translation. This site in the 30S subunit helps reject incorrectly matched transfer RNAs.
Ribosomal protein S4: A bacterial ribosomal protein that binds 16S ribosomal RNA and participates in assembly of the 30S subunit. Its interaction with ribosomal RNA helps organize the subunit’s head and body.
Tetracycline: An antibiotic that binds the bacterial 30S subunit and blocks aminoacyl-transfer RNA entry into the ribosome. It inhibits translation by obstructing a key site on the small subunit.
Mitochondrial ribosome: A ribosome inside mitochondria that synthesizes proteins encoded by mitochondrial DNA. Its bacterial ancestry is reflected in a small subunit that differs from bacterial 30S ribosomes.
Messenger RNA: A nucleic acid molecule that carries protein-coding information from DNA to ribosomes. The 30S subunit binds its codons and positions them for decoding.
Ribosomal protein S12: A protein of the bacterial 30S subunit that contributes to decoding accuracy and is a target of streptomycin resistance mutations. It lies near the decoding center and influences selection fidelity.
