5G

5G is the fifth generation of mobile network technology, standardized to provide higher capacity, lower latency, and support for a wider range of connected devices and services.

New Radio: The 5G radio access technology defined by 3GPP for communication between devices and cellular base stations. It defines the air interface through which 5G devices connect to the network.
Enhanced Mobile Broadband: A 5G service category focused on high data rates and increased network capacity for broadband access. It covers faster mobile internet and high-capacity uses such as video streaming.
3GPP: A partnership of telecommunications standards organizations that develops specifications for cellular systems. 3GPP produced the principal technical specifications for 5G New Radio and its core network.
Wi-Fi 6: The Wi-Fi generation standardized as IEEE 802.11ax, designed to improve efficiency in dense wireless networks. It is a common local wireless alternative to 5G for indoor and campus connectivity.
Millimeter wave: Radio waves with frequencies roughly between 30 and 300 gigahertz, offering wide bandwidth over short ranges. Some 5G deployments use these high frequencies for very high capacity in limited areas.
Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication: A 5G service category targeting highly reliable communication with very low latency. It addresses time-sensitive uses such as industrial control and remote operation.
IMT-2020: The International Telecommunication Union framework and requirements for systems recognized as fifth-generation mobile technology. It set the international performance framework against which 5G systems were assessed.
Fiber-optic communication: Communication that transmits information as light through optical fibers. Fiber offers high-capacity wired access that 5G may complement or replace at the network edge.
Massive MIMO: A wireless technique that uses many antennas to serve multiple data streams and shape radio beams. Large antenna arrays increase 5G capacity and direct signals toward users.
Massive Machine-Type Communications: A 5G service category designed to connect very large numbers of low-power devices. It supports dense sensor and Internet of Things deployments.
