8888 Uprising

The 8888 Uprising was a nationwide pro-democracy movement in Burma that began on 8 August 1988 and was violently suppressed by the military.

Burmese Way to Socialism: The one-party socialist system imposed in Burma under Ne Win from 1962 to 1988. Its economic failures and political controls formed the backdrop to the uprising.
Aung San Suu Kyi: A Burmese political leader who became a prominent pro-democracy figure in 1988. Her first major political speech, delivered at Shwedagon Pagoda, addressed the uprising.
General strike: A coordinated work stoppage in which workers across multiple sectors cease work to exert political or economic pressure. Strikes brought workplaces and public services into the uprising beyond student campuses.
