Abydos King List

The Abydos King List is a New Kingdom inscription in the Temple of Seti I at Abydos, naming selected Egyptian rulers in a ritual sequence. It is a major but selective source for Egyptian chronology.

Seti I: A pharaoh of Egypt’s Nineteenth Dynasty who ruled during the thirteenth century BCE. He commissioned the temple inscription that presents his royal lineage.
Pharaoh: The conventional modern title for a king who ruled ancient Egypt. The inscription organizes its entries around Egypt’s institution of kingship.
Turin King List: An ancient Egyptian papyrus preserving a chronological list of rulers and regnal durations. Unlike the ritual selection at Abydos, it preserves reign lengths for many rulers.
Ramesses II: A pharaoh of Egypt’s Nineteenth Dynasty who ruled for roughly six decades in the thirteenth century BCE. He completed his father’s temple and appears at the inscription’s conclusion.
Temple of Seti I: A mortuary temple at Abydos built by Seti I and completed by his son Ramesses II. Its wall preserves the celebrated sequence of royal names.
Egyptian hieroglyphs: A writing system using logographic, syllabic, and alphabetic signs in ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphic royal names make the carved sequence identifiable.
