Knowra Aceh Sultanate Aceh Sultanate The Aceh Sultanate was a Muslim state in northern Sumatra that became a major regional power in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, controlling trade and resisting Portuguese expansion.
Sultanate of Samudera Pasai : A Muslim kingdom in northern Sumatra that flourished from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century. Its decline helped open the way for Aceh’s rise as the region’s leading Muslim state.
Sultan Iskandar Muda : The Acehnese ruler who reigned from 1607 to 1636, expanding the sultanate’s military and commercial power. His reign marked Aceh’s greatest territorial expansion and centralized strength.
Pepper trade : The long-distance commerce in pepper, a valuable spice grown in South and Southeast Asia. Pepper exports supplied a major source of wealth for Aceh and its trading partners.
Siege of Malacca (1629) : The 1629 Acehnese campaign to capture Portuguese-held Malacca, which ended in failure. Its defeat exposed limits to Aceh’s power despite Iskandar Muda’s military expansion.
Portuguese conquest of Malacca : The 1511 capture of Malacca by Portuguese forces under Afonso de Albuquerque. Portuguese control of Malacca redirected commerce and sharpened Aceh’s rivalry with European power.
Sultan Iskandar Thani : The ruler of Aceh from 1636 to 1641, succeeding Iskandar Muda. His reign continued the sultanate’s courtly and scholarly life after its major expansion.
Indian Ocean trade : The maritime exchange network connecting East Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Aceh’s merchants and ports participated in this larger system of goods, people, and ideas.
Aceh War : The conflict between the Dutch and the Aceh Sultanate, beginning with the Dutch invasion of 1873. The war marked the violent end of Aceh’s independence as a sovereign sultanate.
Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah : The first ruler of Aceh to use the title sultan, reigning from about 1514 to 1530. His campaigns consolidated Aceh and established its sultanate amid competition with Portugal.
Nuruddin ar-Raniri : A seventeenth-century Islamic scholar and writer who served at the Acehnese court. His religious writings and court service influenced debates about Islamic doctrine in Aceh.
