Achaemenid Empire

An ancient Iranian empire founded by Cyrus the Great that ruled much of western and central Asia from the sixth to fourth centuries BCE.

Satrapy: A province governed by a satrap, especially within the Achaemenid and later Persian empires. Satrapies divided imperial territory into governable provinces under appointed officials.
Cyrus the Great: The founder of the Achaemenid Empire, who conquered Media, Lydia, and Babylonia. His campaigns created the empire and set its early pattern of rule.
Xerxes I: An Achaemenid king who ruled from 486 to 465 BCE and led the invasion of Greece in 480 BCE. His reign brought the empire into its best-known conflict with the Greek city-states.
Pasargadae: An early Achaemenid royal city in southwestern Iran, associated especially with Cyrus the Great. Its palaces and Cyrus’s tomb reveal the dynasty’s earliest monumental center.
Seleucid Empire: A Hellenistic empire founded by Seleucus I that controlled much of the former Achaemenid territory. The Seleucids inherited and reshaped large parts of the empire after Alexander’s conquests.
Royal Road: An ancient route linking Susa and Sardis, maintained by the Achaemenid state for travel and communication. The road helped royal officials and messages cross the empire quickly.
Astyages: The last king of the Median Empire, defeated by Cyrus the Great in the sixth century BCE. Cyrus’s victory over Astyages began the rapid expansion of Persian power.
Artaxerxes II: An Achaemenid king who ruled from 404 to 358 BCE, the longest-reigning Persian monarch. His reign illustrates the empire’s continued power after the Peloponnesian War.
Naqsh-e Rustam: An archaeological site near Persepolis containing Achaemenid royal tombs and later reliefs. The cliff-cut royal tombs display kingship through monumental architecture and inscriptions.
Parthian Empire: An Iranian empire that ruled much of western Asia from the mid-third century BCE to the third century CE. Parthian rulers later controlled many lands once governed by the Achaemenids.
