Acid anhydride

An oxide that forms an acid when it reacts with water or forms salts with bases. Many nonmetal oxides, such as sulfur trioxide, are acid anhydrides.

Sulfur trioxide: A colorless sulfur oxide that reacts vigorously with water to form sulfuric acid. It is a classic example: hydration produces the corresponding oxoacid.
Oxide: A binary chemical compound in which oxygen is bonded to one or more other elements. Acid anhydrides are a reactive class of oxides.
Sulfuric acid: A strong diprotic acid with formula H₂SO₄, produced industrially on a large scale. Sulfur trioxide, an acid anhydride, is hydrated to make this acid.
Acid anhydride (organic chemistry): A carboxylic acid derivative containing two acyl groups joined by an oxygen atom. The shared name describes a distinct organic functional group, not an acidic oxide.
Carbon dioxide: A colorless gas that dissolves in water to form carbonic acid and reacts with bases to form carbonates. Its reactions with water and bases illustrate acid-anhydride behavior.
Basic oxide: An oxide that reacts with acids to form salts and often reacts with water to form a base. Its typical reactions oppose those of an acid anhydride.
Sulfuric acid production: The industrial manufacture of sulfuric acid, chiefly through the contact process. The contact process uses sulfur trioxide before its conversion to sulfuric acid.
Carboxylic acid: An organic compound containing a carboxyl group, –COOH. Organic acid anhydrides can be viewed as products of dehydration between carboxylic acids.
Phosphorus pentoxide: A white phosphorus oxide, commonly represented by P₄O₁₀, that reacts with water to form phosphoric acid. Its hydration demonstrates how an oxide can yield an oxoacid.
Amphoteric oxide: An oxide that reacts with both acids and bases to form salts and water. Its dual reactivity differs from the predominantly acidic behavior described here.
