Acoustic phonetics studies the physical properties of speech sounds as sound waves, including their frequency, amplitude, and temporal structure.

Sound spectrum: A representation of a sound's energy distributed across frequency. Spectra reveal the frequency components that distinguish speech sounds.
Acoustic wave: A pressure disturbance that propagates through a material medium. Speech is carried through air as changing pressure.
Speech recognition: The computational process of converting spoken language into text or structured representations. Recognition systems use acoustic patterns to infer spoken units.
Articulatory phonetics: The study of how speech sounds are produced by the vocal tract and articulators. It describes production gestures rather than the resulting sound waves.
Fundamental frequency: The lowest frequency of a periodic signal, corresponding to its repetition rate. Its variation provides a principal acoustic cue to vocal pitch.
Frequency: The number of cycles of a periodic event per unit of time. It describes pitch-related periodicity and the spacing of spectral components.
Speech synthesis: The artificial generation of spoken language from text or other input. Synthesizers reproduce acoustic cues associated with speech sounds.
Auditory phonetics: The study of how listeners perceive and process speech sounds. It focuses on hearing, whereas acoustic phonetics characterizes the signal.
Formant: A concentration of acoustic energy near a resonance frequency of a sound-producing system. Vocal-tract resonances shape the formant patterns used to identify vowels.
Amplitude: The magnitude of a signal's variation from its equilibrium value. It measures pressure variation associated with acoustic intensity.
