Adal Sultanate

A medieval Muslim sultanate in the Horn of Africa, centered in present-day Somaliland and eastern Ethiopia. It fought the Ethiopian Empire and reached its height under Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi.

Ethiopian–Adal War: A sixteenth-century conflict between the Adal Sultanate and the Ethiopian Empire, intensified by Ottoman and Portuguese involvement. This war was the central military struggle through which Adal reached its greatest power.
Ifat Sultanate: A medieval Muslim sultanate in the Horn of Africa that preceded Adal and fought the Ethiopian kingdom. Adal arose from political traditions and territories associated with Ifat.

Gelawdewos: An Ethiopian emperor who ruled from 1540 to 1559 and fought to restore the kingdom after Adal’s invasions. His campaigns reversed Adal’s gains and helped restore Ethiopian rule.
Kingdom of Kaffa: A historical kingdom in southwestern Ethiopia, inhabited chiefly by the Kaffa people. Kaffa offers a comparison with another regional kingdom outside Adal’s Muslim political sphere.
Ottoman Empire: A Eurasian empire that expanded around the eastern Mediterranean, Red Sea, and western Asia from the late thirteenth century. Ottoman support supplied Adal with firearms and helped sustain its campaigns.
Aussa Sultanate: An Afar Muslim sultanate in the Afar region of the Horn of Africa, established in the sixteenth century. Aussa followed Adal’s decline as a major Muslim state in the region.
