Adam Malik

Adam Malik (1917–1984) was an Indonesian journalist, independence activist, diplomat, and politician. He served as foreign minister, vice president, and president of the United Nations General Assembly.

Sukarno: Sukarno was an Indonesian nationalist leader and the country’s first president. Malik worked in Sukarno’s government before becoming a critic of his foreign policy.
Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Indonesia’s government department responsible for foreign relations and diplomatic service. Malik led the ministry from 1966 to 1977, shaping Indonesia’s foreign policy.
Medan: Medan is the capital of North Sumatra and a major city in western Indonesia. Malik was born in Pematangsiantar and began his political and journalistic work in the region.
Jakarta Declaration of 1976: The 1976 ASEAN declaration affirmed regional cooperation, noninterference, and peaceful dispute settlement. It records the diplomatic principles Malik helped advance as ASEAN’s founding generation took stock.
Suharto: Suharto was an Indonesian military officer and president from 1967 to 1998. Malik served as foreign minister and vice president during Suharto’s rule.
United Nations General Assembly: The United Nations’ main deliberative body, comprising representatives of all member states. Malik presided over its 26th session in 1971–1972, a rare role for an Indonesian diplomat.
Antara: Antara is Indonesia’s national news agency, founded in 1937. Malik helped establish Antara as a news agency during the Dutch colonial period.
ASEAN Declaration: The 1967 Bangkok Declaration established the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Malik signed the founding document as Indonesia’s foreign minister.
Mohammad Hatta: Mohammad Hatta was an Indonesian independence leader and the country’s first vice president. Hatta and Malik both helped shape Indonesia’s early diplomacy and political institutions.
ASEAN: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a regional organization founded in 1967. Malik was among the foreign ministers who signed the declaration establishing ASEAN.
