Afar Region

Afar Region is a regional state in northeastern Ethiopia, inhabited chiefly by the Afar people. It includes much of the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and lowest areas on Earth.

Afar people: The Afar are a Cushitic-speaking people living mainly in Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti. They form the region’s chief population and shape its language, culture, and pastoral traditions.
East African Rift: The East African Rift is a tectonic zone where the African Plate is splitting into separate plates. Its branches help explain the region’s active faulting and volcanic landscape.

Dallol: Dallol is a hydrothermal field in Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression, marked by acidic pools and mineral deposits. Its vivid geothermal formations epitomize the region’s harsh and unusual terrain.
Afar language: Afar is a Cushitic language spoken chiefly in Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti. It is the principal language associated with the region’s population.
Afar Triple Junction: The Afar Triple Junction is a tectonic meeting point where three rift systems diverge. It lies beneath the region and drives its exceptionally active crustal deformation.
Afar cattle raiding: Cattle raiding is the seizure of livestock from rival groups, sometimes occurring in Afar pastoral areas. Livestock’s economic and social importance helps explain the stakes of local conflicts.
Aussa: Aussa is a historical and geographic name for the Awsa area of the Afar lowlands in Ethiopia. The area became a political center within the territory now governed as Afar Region.
Lake Afrera: Lake Afrera is a hypersaline lake in Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression. Its salt-rich waters connect Afar’s geology with local extraction and livelihoods.
