Afghan diaspora

Afghan diaspora comprises Afghan communities living outside Afghanistan, shaped by successive waves of migration, labor mobility, and forced displacement.

Soviet–Afghan War: A 1979–1989 conflict in which Soviet forces supported Afghanistan’s communist government against insurgent groups. The invasion and ensuing conflict drove millions of Afghans into neighboring countries and farther abroad.
Refugee: A person outside their country who cannot safely return because of persecution, conflict, or serious danger. Many Afghan communities abroad formed through refuge, though not all diaspora members are refugees.
Afghan Americans: People of Afghan origin who live in the United States, including immigrants and their descendants. US communities include refugees from multiple migration waves and their families.
Dari: A variety of Persian spoken in Afghanistan and by communities abroad. Dari connects many diaspora households to communication, cultural expression, and Afghan media.
Afghan Civil War: A series of armed conflicts among Afghan factions following the Soviet withdrawal and the collapse of the communist government. Fighting and instability in the 1990s extended displacement beyond the earlier refugee exodus.
Asylum: Protection granted by a state to a person who has fled persecution or serious danger in another country. Asylum has been a route to safety and residence for Afghans arriving in many destination countries.
Afghan Canadians: People of Afghan origin who live in Canada, including immigrants and their descendants. Canadian communities grew through refugee resettlement as well as other forms of migration.
Pashto: An Iranian language spoken chiefly in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Pashtun communities. Pashto maintains linguistic and cultural ties among many Afghans living across borders.
War in Afghanistan (2001–2021): A conflict beginning with the 2001 US-led invasion and ending with the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. The war produced new refugee movements and migration by people connected to foreign forces and institutions.
Resettlement: The transfer of refugees from a country of refuge to a third country that offers permanent residence. Resettlement programs established Afghan communities in countries distant from Afghanistan and its neighbors.
