Knowra Afghan National Army Afghan National Army The Afghan National Army was the armed force of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, established after the 2001 U.S.-led invasion and dissolved during the Taliban takeover in 2021.
Afghan National Army Corps : A regional operational formation of the Afghan National Army, responsible for military operations within an assigned area. Corps provided the army’s principal regional commands and coordinated units across Afghanistan.
Bonn Agreement : The 2001 agreement that established an interim political framework for Afghanistan after the Taliban government’s fall. It laid the political groundwork for rebuilding state institutions, including a national army.
Fall of Kabul (2021) : The Taliban’s capture of Kabul on 15 August 2021, ending the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The army’s disintegration accompanied the capital’s fall and the republic’s collapse.
Taliban : An Islamist political and military movement that ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 and returned to power in 2021. The Taliban was the army’s principal insurgent adversary and ultimately defeated the republic’s forces.
Afghan Air Force : The air arm of Afghanistan’s armed forces, rebuilt after 2001 to provide transport, reconnaissance, and combat support. Its aircraft supplied mobility and fire support that ground units could not readily replace.
United States invasion of Afghanistan : The U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 and removed the Taliban government from power. The campaign created the post-Taliban political setting in which the new army was formed.
Taliban offensive (2021) : The Taliban’s nationwide military campaign in 2021 that captured provincial capitals and culminated in Kabul’s fall. The offensive exposed how quickly Afghan forces lost territory and cohesion.
Islamic State–Khorasan Province : An affiliate of the Islamic State active mainly in Afghanistan and Pakistan since 2015. It was a separate armed threat, distinct from the Taliban insurgency the army primarily fought.
Afghan Local Police : A U.S.-supported force of locally recruited Afghan police established to provide security in rural areas. Its relationship with the army shows how rural security depended on forces beyond the regular military.
Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration in Afghanistan : A post-2001 program to disarm, demobilize, and reintegrate former Afghan militia members. It addressed the armed factions that the new national force was meant to replace or absorb.
