Ageism

Ageism is stereotyping, prejudice, or discrimination directed at people because of their age. It can target people of any age and occur in institutions, interactions, or internal beliefs.

Age stereotype: A generalized belief about the traits or abilities of people in a particular age group. Ageism begins when assumptions about an age group replace attention to individuals.
Age discrimination in employment: Unfair workplace treatment or employment decisions based on a person's age. Hiring, promotion, training, and dismissal can all reproduce ageist assumptions.
Internalized ageism: The adoption of negative age stereotypes by people who apply them to themselves as they age. External messages can become self-limiting beliefs about one's own abilities and future.
Adultism: Bias favoring adults and restricting the rights or agency of children and young people. Adultism names a specific age-based hierarchy that primarily disadvantages younger people.
Age discrimination: Unfair treatment of a person because of their age. This is ageism expressed through decisions about access, opportunity, or treatment.
Mandatory retirement: A policy requiring workers to leave employment upon reaching a specified age. It makes age itself a criterion for ending employment, regardless of individual capacity.
Ageism and health: The effects of age-based stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination on health and healthcare. Ageism can shape both the care people receive and their health over time.
Ableism: Discrimination and social exclusion based on actual or perceived disability. Ageism and ableism can overlap, but age alone and disability are distinct grounds.
Stereotype threat: The risk that awareness of a negative group stereotype will impair performance in a situation where it applies. Age stereotypes can affect performance when people fear confirming them.
Elder abuse: Harm or neglect inflicted on an older adult by someone in a relationship of trust or responsibility. Ageist devaluation can help normalize neglect and mistreatment of older people.
