Knowra Aggression Aggression Aggression is behavior intended to harm another person who seeks to avoid that harm. It can be physical, verbal, or relational, and may be impulsive or planned.
Frustration–aggression hypothesis : A psychological hypothesis linking frustration to aggression, later revised to treat frustration as one possible source of aggression. It explains how blocked goals can increase the likelihood of aggressive responses.
Anger : A negative emotional state involving irritation or hostility, often arising from perceived provocation. Anger may accompany aggression, but feeling angry is not itself behavior intended to harm.
Bullying : Repeated harmful behavior involving a power imbalance between the person or group causing harm and the target. Aggression is a core behavior in bullying, though repetition and power imbalance distinguish bullying.
Social learning theory : A theory that explains behavior through observation, imitation, and reinforcement in social settings. It accounts for aggression acquired by observing models and their consequences.
Post-traumatic stress disorder : A mental disorder that can develop after exposure to traumatic events, involving intrusive symptoms, avoidance, and altered arousal or mood. Experiencing aggression can be traumatic and contribute to PTSD.
General Aggression Model : An integrative psychological model in which personal and situational factors shape cognition, affect, arousal, and behavior. It traces how hostile thoughts, feelings, and arousal can produce an aggressive act.
Violence : The use of physical force intended to injure, damage, or kill. Violence is physical; aggression also includes verbal and relational acts.
Domestic violence : Abusive behavior by one person against a family member or intimate partner. It is a consequential setting in which aggressive acts can form patterns of coercive control.
Instinct theory : The view that some behaviors arise from inherited, biologically organized tendencies. It contrasts with accounts that explain aggression mainly through learning and situational experience.
Social rejection : The experience of being excluded or refused acceptance by individuals or groups. Aggressive behavior can damage relationships and lead others to reject the perpetrator.
