Ājīvika

Ājīvika was an ancient Indian ascetic movement whose teachings emphasized niyati, the belief that fate determines the course of every life.

Niyati: In Ājīvika thought, niyati is the principle of fate that governs the course of every life. This doctrine is the movement’s defining claim: liberation and experience unfold according to an inexorable order.
Makkhali Gosāla: Makkhali Gosāla was an ancient Indian teacher associated with the founding and doctrines of Ājīvika. Later Buddhist and Jain accounts identify him as the movement’s leading early teacher.
Barabar Caves: The Barabar Caves are rock-cut caves in Bihar, some of which were dedicated to Ājīvika ascetics. Their polished interiors provide rare material evidence of royal support for Ājīvika communities.
Early Buddhism: Early Buddhism is the earliest recoverable phase of Buddhist teaching, preserved chiefly in early textual collections. It gives intention and practice a role in liberation, unlike Ājīvika fate-centered teaching.
Saṃsāra: Saṃsāra is the cycle of rebirth through which beings pass in Indian religious traditions. Ājīvika accounts placed lives within a fixed progression through repeated births.
Mahāvīra: Mahāvīra was the twenty-fourth tīrthaṅkara of Jain tradition and a contemporary of Makkhali Gosāla. Jain texts describe Gosāla’s earlier association with Mahāvīra and their later doctrinal conflict.
Ashoka's Edicts: Ashoka’s Edicts are inscriptions issued by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the third century BCE. Several inscriptions record Ashoka’s gifts of caves to Ājīvikas.
Jain Karma Theory: Jain karma theory treats karma as subtle matter bound to the soul through action and passion. Jain discipline seeks to stop and shed karma, whereas Ājīvika liberation follows fixed destiny.
Karma: Karma is the principle that actions shape consequences, especially across lives, in Indian religious traditions. Ājīvika determinism challenged the idea that personal action could alter the course of rebirth.
Gautama Buddha: Gautama Buddha was the teacher whose teachings became the foundation of Buddhism. Early Buddhist texts present Ājīvika doctrines as a rival position in the same renunciant milieu.
