Al-Baladhuri

A ninth-century Arab historian, al-Baladhuri is best known for accounts of the early Muslim conquests, especially in his histories of the Islamic caliphate.

Abbasid Caliphate: An Islamic dynasty that ruled much of the Muslim world from 750 to 1258. Al-Baladhuri wrote in the Abbasid era, when caliphal authority shaped the history he recorded.
Futuh al-Buldan: Al-Baladhuri’s history of the Muslim conquests and the incorporation of territories into the caliphate. This is his principal account of conquests, treaties, and provincial arrangements.
Isnad: A chain of named transmitters used to trace the origin of a report in Islamic scholarship. Chains of transmission help explain how reports in his histories were attributed and preserved.
Futuh literature: A genre of Arabic writing about the conquests that brought lands under Muslim rule. Al-Baladhuri’s conquest history became one of the genre’s major surviving works.
Arabic historiography: The writing and study of history in Arabic-speaking societies. His works belong to a tradition that organized reports about the Prophet, conquests, and dynasties.
Ansab al-Ashraf: A genealogical and historical work by al-Baladhuri about the Prophet’s family and leading Arab figures. It shows how he used lineage and biography to recount early Islamic political history.
Oral tradition: The transmission of knowledge through spoken accounts across generations. Many early conquest reports circulated orally before historians assembled them in written works.
Islamic historiography: The historical writing produced in Muslim societies across different periods and languages. His works helped establish durable ways of narrating the early caliphate’s expansion.
Hadith: Reports about the words and actions of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions. The report-based transmission of hadith also influenced the methods used by early Muslim historians.
Conquest of Persia: The seventh-century campaigns that brought the Sasanian Empire under Muslim rule. Al-Baladhuri preserves reports about the conquest and reorganization of former Sasanian lands.
