Al-Biruni

Al-Biruni (c. 973–1050) was a Persian polymath whose works combined mathematical precision with historical and comparative inquiry across astronomy, geography, and religion.

Islamic Golden Age: A period of major intellectual and scientific activity across the Islamic world, conventionally dated from the eighth to thirteenth centuries. The institutions and scholarly networks of this era shaped the world in which Al-Biruni worked.
The Determination of the Coordinates of Cities: Al-Biruni’s work on finding geographical coordinates through astronomical observations and mathematical methods. It applies his mathematical astronomy to the practical problem of locating places.
Spherical trigonometry: The mathematics of angles and distances on the surface of a sphere. It supplied tools for relating observations on the sky to positions on Earth.
Abū al-Faḍl Bayhaqī: An eleventh-century Persian historian and secretary known for a detailed history of the Ghaznavid dynasty. Bayhaqi’s historical writing belongs to the same Persianate scholarly world as Al-Biruni’s work.
Khwarazm: A historical region around the lower Amu Darya, in present-day Central Asia. Al-Biruni was born in Khwarazm and began his scholarly life there.
Kitab al-Hind: Al-Biruni’s account of Indian religion, philosophy, literature, customs, and sciences, written after his study of Sanskrit sources. It is his most extensive comparative study of Indian society and intellectual life.
Latitude: The angular distance of a location north or south of the equator. Al-Biruni connected latitude to astronomical observations of the Sun and stars.
Edward Sachau: A nineteenth-century German orientalist who edited and translated major works by Al-Biruni. Sachau’s editions and translations made Al-Biruni’s writings accessible to modern scholarship.
Ptolemaic astronomy: An astronomical system that explains celestial motions using Earth-centered spheres and epicycles. Al-Biruni examined the mathematical astronomy inherited from Ptolemy and his commentators.
Chronology of Ancient Nations: Al-Biruni’s comparative study of calendars, eras, and religious and political chronologies. It shows how he used systematic comparison to reconcile different accounts of time.
