Knowra ALBA ALBA ALBA is a regional alliance founded by Venezuela and Cuba to promote economic and political cooperation among member states. Its full name is the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America.
Hugo Chávez : Hugo Chávez was president of Venezuela from 1999 to 2013 and a leading proponent of Latin American integration. As Venezuela’s president, he initiated the alliance with Cuba.
Cuba–Venezuela medical cooperation : Cuba–Venezuela medical cooperation includes Cuban health workers serving in Venezuela through bilateral agreements. The program became a prominent example of ALBA’s social cooperation model.
Misión Milagro : Misión Milagro is a Cuba–Venezuela program that provides eye care and surgery to underserved patients. It illustrates ALBA-linked social programs delivered across national borders.
Pacific Alliance : The Pacific Alliance is a Latin American trade bloc founded in 2011 by Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. It represents a more market-oriented integration model than ALBA.
Fidel Castro : Fidel Castro led Cuba from 1959 to 2008 and shaped its domestic and foreign policy. He partnered with Chávez in establishing the alliance.
Petrocaribe : Petrocaribe was a Venezuelan-led energy cooperation initiative that offered Caribbean countries preferential oil financing. Its oil-financing arrangements complemented ALBA’s economic cooperation.

MERCOSUR : MERCOSUR is a South American trade bloc founded by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Its customs-union framework differs from ALBA’s emphasis on solidarity and cooperation.
Free Trade Area of the Americas : The Free Trade Area of the Americas was a proposed trade bloc spanning the Americas, negotiated from 1994 until talks stalled in 2005. ALBA emerged as an alternative to this U.S.-backed hemispheric trade project.
ALBA Bank : The ALBA Bank is a development finance institution created by member governments to support regional projects. It was designed to finance projects aligned with the alliance’s aims.
