Albigensian Crusade

A papally authorized campaign fought from 1209 to 1229 by northern French forces against Cathar communities and their supporters in southern France. It expanded the French crown’s authority in Languedoc.

Catharism: A medieval Christian dualist movement whose communities flourished in parts of southern Europe. The movement targeted by the crusade shaped its religious justification.
Languedoc: A historical region of southern France, with major medieval centers including Toulouse and Carcassonne. Its fragmented lordships and strong urban centers shaped the conflict’s setting.
Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse: The ruler of Toulouse from 1222 to 1249 who negotiated the settlement ending the main crusade. His submission under the 1229 treaty ended the campaign’s principal phase.
Crown of Aragon: A medieval composite monarchy centered on the kingdoms of Aragon and later including other territories. Its defeat at Muret weakened its influence north of the Pyrenees.
Pope Innocent III: The pope from 1198 to 1216 who strengthened papal authority and authorized the crusade against Catharism. His calls for intervention turned anti-heretical policy into a crusade.
Raymond VI, Count of Toulouse: The ruler of Toulouse from 1194 to 1222, repeatedly accused by church authorities of protecting heretics. Disputes over his response to heresy helped trigger the campaign.
Arnaud Amalric: A Cistercian abbot and papal legate who helped lead the crusade’s early operations. He represented papal authority in the field during the opening campaign.
Battle of Muret: The 1213 battle in which Simon de Montfort’s forces defeated a coalition led by Peter II of Aragon. The victory blocked Aragonese intervention and strengthened crusader power.
Siege of Béziers: The 1209 capture and sack of Béziers by crusader forces at the start of the campaign. Its fall established the campaign’s early pattern of coercive conquest.
Catholic Church: The Christian church in communion with the bishop of Rome. Papal authority supplied the religious and legal framework for crusading.
