Albrecht von Haller

Albrecht von Haller (1708–1777) was a Swiss physician, anatomist, physiologist, botanist, and poet. His experiments distinguished irritability in muscle from sensibility in nerves and helped establish physiology as an experimental science.

Muscle irritability: The capacity of muscle tissue to contract in response to stimulation, a property studied experimentally by Haller. Haller treated contraction after stimulation as evidence that muscle itself is irritable.
University of Tübingen: A German university founded in 1477, where Haller began his medical studies. Haller studied medicine there before continuing his education elsewhere.
Charles Bonnet: A Genevan naturalist and philosopher who investigated reproduction, regeneration, and the senses. Bonnet corresponded with Haller and shared his interest in experimental questions about living organisms.
