Alexander I of Yugoslavia

Alexander I was king of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes from 1921 to 1929, then king of Yugoslavia until his assassination in 1934. He imposed royal dictatorship in 1929 to preserve the state’s unity.

6 January Dictatorship: The royal dictatorship Alexander I established on 6 January 1929, suspending the constitution and banning political parties. It was Alexander’s decisive response to parliamentary deadlock and rising national tensions.
Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes: A South Slavic monarchy founded in 1918 and renamed Yugoslavia in 1929. Alexander first ruled this kingdom before changing its name and political system.
