Alluvial plain

An alluvial plain is a flat or gently sloping landform built from sediment deposited by rivers. It commonly develops where rivers spread across lowlands or emerge from uplands.

Alluvium: Unconsolidated sediment deposited by flowing water, especially rivers and streams. Repeated deposits of alluvium build the plain’s surface.
Fluvial landform: A landform created or modified by rivers and streams. Alluvial plains belong to this broader family of river-shaped terrain.
Indo-Gangetic Plain: A vast lowland across northern South Asia, built largely from sediment carried by the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra systems. It exemplifies a major alluvial plain formed by several large Himalayan river systems.

Irrigation: The artificial application of water to land for agricultural production. Reliable river water and shallow groundwater support irrigation across many alluvial plains.
River engineering: The deliberate modification of rivers and channels to control flow, navigation, or flooding. Levees and channelization can reduce local flooding while changing sediment distribution.
