Aluminium chloride

Aluminium chloride is an inorganic compound of aluminium and chlorine with the formula AlCl₃. It occurs as anhydrous AlCl₃ and as hydrated forms, with uses including catalysis and antiperspirants.

Lewis acid: A chemical species that accepts an electron pair to form a covalent bond. AlCl₃ accepts electron pairs, accounting for its role in many catalytic reactions.
Friedel–Crafts reaction: An electrophilic aromatic substitution that adds an alkyl or acyl group to an aromatic ring. AlCl₃ commonly activates alkyl or acyl halides in these carbon–carbon bond-forming reactions.
Aluminium bromide: An aluminium halide compound with the formula AlBr₃. It is a close halide analogue whose bonding and catalytic behavior can differ from AlCl₃.
Aluminium: A lightweight, silvery chemical element with atomic number 13. Aluminium supplies the central atom in AlCl₃ and commonly forms compounds in the +3 oxidation state.
Dimer: A molecule or molecular unit formed from two bonded identical units. AlCl₃ forms Al₂Cl₆ dimers in the gas phase and in nonpolar environments.
Friedel–Crafts acylation: A reaction that installs an acyl group on an aromatic ring by electrophilic substitution. Anhydrous AlCl₃ helps generate the electrophile used to attach the acyl group.
Aluminium fluoride: An ionic aluminium halide compound with the formula AlF₃. Its strongly ionic, high-melting solid contrasts with the molecular structures of AlCl₃.
Chlorine: A reactive halogen element with atomic number 17. Chlorine forms the three Al–Cl bonds represented in the formula AlCl₃.
Aluminium chloride hexahydrate: The hydrated aluminium chloride compound with formula AlCl₃·6H₂O. This hydrated form is used in antiperspirants and differs sharply from anhydrous AlCl₃.
Antiperspirant: A personal-care product that reduces sweat reaching the skin surface. Aluminium chloride hexahydrate is a potent active ingredient in clinical-strength products.
