American Football League

The American Football League (AFL) was a professional American football league that competed with the NFL from 1960 until its 1970 merger. It introduced innovations in broadcasting and play that shaped modern professional football.

Lamar Hunt: An American sports entrepreneur who founded the AFL and the Kansas City Chiefs. Hunt organized the owners who launched the league in 1959.
AFL–NFL merger: The agreement that united the American Football League and National Football League into one organization. The 1970 merger ended the AFL as an independent league.
Joe Namath: An American football quarterback who led the New York Jets to victory in Super Bowl III. Namath’s championship win became the AFL’s defining proof of competitiveness.
