Amine

An organic compound derived from ammonia by replacing one or more hydrogen atoms with carbon-containing groups. Amines are classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary by how many hydrogens are replaced.

Ammonia: A nitrogen hydride with formula NH₃, consisting of one nitrogen atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms. Replacing one or more of ammonia’s hydrogens with carbon-containing groups produces an amine.
Amine basicity: The tendency of an amine to accept a proton, commonly expressed through its conjugate-acid pKa. Basicity explains why amines form ammonium ions and how substituents alter their behavior.
Aniline: An aromatic amine with a benzene ring bonded directly to an amino group. Aniline is a major feedstock for dyes, polymers, and other aromatic compounds.
Imine: An organic compound containing a carbon–nitrogen double bond. Imines contain a C=N bond, unlike the single-bonded nitrogen characteristic of amines.
Nitrogen: The chemical element with atomic number 7, central to many compounds in living organisms and industry. Nitrogen’s bonding and lone pair give amines their characteristic structure and reactivity.
Nucleophilic substitution: A reaction in which a nucleophile replaces a leaving group attached to an electrophilic atom. Amines use nitrogen’s lone pair to replace leaving groups and form carbon–nitrogen bonds.
Alkaloid: A naturally occurring nitrogen-containing organic compound, often with pronounced effects on animals or humans. Many alkaloids contain amine groups that contribute to their basicity and biological activity.
Nitrile: An organic compound containing a carbon–nitrogen triple bond. Nitriles contain a C≡N group and are not classified as amines.
Alkyl group: A group derived from an alkane by removing one hydrogen atom. Alkyl groups are common carbon-containing substituents attached to amine nitrogen.
Amide: A compound containing a carbonyl group bonded directly to nitrogen. Unlike amines, amides have nitrogen’s lone pair delocalized into a carbonyl group.
