Amu Darya

A major Central Asian river formed by the meeting of the Vakhsh and Panj rivers. It flows northwest from the Pamir and Hindu Kush region across Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan toward the former Aral Sea.

Panj River: A river forming much of the Afghanistan–Tajikistan border and one of the two main headstreams of the Amu Darya. It joins the Vakhsh at the river’s source region.
Oxus: The ancient Greek and Latin name for the Amu Darya. Classical sources describe the same river under this older name.
Irrigation in Central Asia: The large-scale diversion of river water to support farming in the arid lands of Central Asia. Amu Darya water sustains extensive irrigated agriculture across the region.
Syr Darya: A major Central Asian river that flows northwest toward the northern Aral Sea basin. It is the other major river historically feeding the Aral Sea.
Vakhsh River: A major river in Tajikistan that joins the Panj to form the Amu Darya. Its waters supply the other principal headstream of the Amu Darya.
Bactria: An ancient region centered on the upper Amu Darya and parts of modern Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The river bordered and supported this historic Central Asian region.
Cotton production in Uzbekistan: The cultivation of cotton as a major agricultural and export crop in Uzbekistan. Irrigation from the Amu Darya helped expand cotton cultivation.
Zeravshan River: A Central Asian river that flows through Tajikistan and Uzbekistan but usually fails to reach the Amu Darya. Its neighboring basin illustrates how regional rivers can end before reaching a major river or sea.
Aral Sea: A former inland sea in Central Asia, greatly diminished after river water was diverted for irrigation. The Amu Darya historically fed its southern basin.
Transoxiana: A historical region of Central Asia lying chiefly between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya. The river’s classical name gave this region its enduring geographic frame.
