Anatolian beyliks

Anatolian beyliks were regional principalities ruled by beys that emerged as Seljuk authority weakened, especially during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. They competed with one another and helped shape the political landscape from which the Ottoman state arose.

Sultanate of Rum: The Seljuk Turkish state that ruled much of Anatolia from the late eleventh century until its fragmentation in the thirteenth. Its weakening under Mongol pressure created openings for regional beys.
Karamanids: A powerful Turkic dynasty that ruled a principality centered in south-central Anatolia from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. The Karamanids were the Ottomans’ most persistent Anatolian rivals.
Bey: A Turkic title for a lord or ruler, often used for leaders of regional principalities. The title names the rulers whose authority defined these principalities.
Ottoman unification of Anatolia: The process by which the Ottoman state brought most Anatolian principalities under its rule. The beyliks were the principal rivals and territorial units in this consolidation.
Battle of Köse Dağ: A 1243 battle in which the Mongols defeated the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. The defeat accelerated Seljuk subordination and political fragmentation in Anatolia.
Germiyanids: A Turkish principality in western Anatolia, prominent from the late thirteenth century until its absorption by the Ottomans. Their territory passed to the Ottomans through a combination of marriage, diplomacy, and conquest.
Uç: A frontier zone in the medieval Islamic world where military leaders governed borderlands and organized raids. Frontier institutions helped some beys gather fighters and establish independent rule.
Ottoman Interregnum: The civil war among Bayezid I’s sons that followed the Ottoman defeat at Ankara in 1402. Timur’s victory revived several beyliks by disrupting Ottoman control of Anatolia.
Mongol invasion of Anatolia: The Mongol expansion into Anatolia that brought the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum under Mongol dominance. Mongol authority weakened central control and enabled local rulers to gain autonomy.
Aydınids: A maritime principality in western Anatolia that flourished in the fourteenth century. The Aydınids built naval power and participated in commerce and warfare across the Aegean.
