Ancient Egypt

The civilization that developed along the Nile in northeastern Africa, from prehistoric times through the Roman conquest in 30 BCE. Its history is marked by centralized kingdoms, distinctive religious traditions, and monumental architecture.

Nile: A major river flowing north through northeastern Africa into the Mediterranean Sea. Its annual inundation sustained agriculture and linked Egypt’s settlements.
Predynastic Egypt: The period of Egyptian cultural development before the first dynasties, ending around 3100 BCE. Its farming communities and emerging elites preceded political unification.
Great Pyramid of Giza: The pyramid built for the Fourth Dynasty pharaoh Khufu at Giza. It shows the scale of royal organization during the Old Kingdom.
Hatshepsut: An Eighteenth Dynasty pharaoh who ruled Egypt as king in the fifteenth century BCE. Her reign demonstrates how royal authority could be represented and contested.

Pharaoh: The title used for kings of ancient Egypt, regarded as rulers with sacred responsibilities. Pharaohs united political authority with divine kingship.
Naqada culture: A sequence of Predynastic Egyptian archaeological cultures centered in Upper Egypt. Naqada material culture reveals growing social hierarchy and interregional exchange.
Valley of the Kings: A royal burial ground near Thebes used chiefly during Egypt’s New Kingdom. Its rock-cut tombs reveal changing royal burial practices and funerary art.
Akhenaten: An Eighteenth Dynasty pharaoh who promoted the Aten and founded a new capital at Amarna. His religious reforms disrupted established temples and royal traditions.
Middle Kingdom of Egypt: A period of renewed centralized rule in Egypt, conventionally dated about 2055–1650 BCE. Its reunification followed political fragmentation and reshaped royal culture.
