Anglo-Saxon kingship

Anglo-Saxon kingship was the political institution through which rulers governed early medieval English kingdoms. Its authority combined dynastic claims, military leadership, lawmaking, and relationships with nobles and the church.

Witan: An assembly of senior clergy and lay nobles who advised Anglo-Saxon kings and witnessed royal decisions. Its counsel and consent helped kings secure support for succession, law, and major grants.
Heptarchy: A traditional name for the seven major Anglo-Saxon kingdoms conventionally identified in early English history. The competing kingdoms formed the political landscape in which early English kingship developed.
Alfred the Great: King of Wessex from 871 to 899, known for resisting Viking invasions and promoting learning and legal reform. Alfred’s defense and reforms exemplify the consolidation of West Saxon royal authority.
Unification of England: The gradual consolidation of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms into a single English polity during the ninth and tenth centuries. The growth of royal authority made political unification possible.
Anglo-Saxon succession: The practices and disputes through which early English rulers were chosen or inherited their thrones. Succession was not governed by a single, consistently applied rule of primogeniture.
Thegn: A high-ranking Anglo-Saxon retainer who held land and owed military and other services to a lord or king. Thegns connected royal authority to local military and administrative power.
Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain: The migration and settlement of Germanic-speaking peoples in Britain from the fifth century onward. New communities and regional rulers emerged during the settlement period.
Æthelstan: King of the Anglo-Saxons from 924 to 939, often regarded as the first ruler of a unified England. His rule marks a major expansion of kingship beyond the older regional kingdoms.
Danelaw: The regions of England where Scandinavian law and political power were established during the Viking Age. Conflict and settlement in the Danelaw forced kings to extend rule through warfare and negotiated governance.
Viking kingship: The forms of royal rule developed among Scandinavian peoples during the Viking Age. Scandinavian rulers in England challenged established dynasties and introduced competing claims to authority.
