Animal ethics

Animal ethics is the philosophical study of how humans should treat animals and weigh their interests, including questions about rights, welfare, and human use.

Animal sentience: The capacity of animals to have subjective experiences, including sensations such as pain and pleasure. Sentience supplies a common basis for considering animals’ interests morally significant.
Animal liberation: A movement and ethical position opposing the systematic exploitation of animals. It treats ending institutionalized animal use as a demand of equal consideration.
Factory farming: Large-scale industrial livestock production that relies on intensive confinement and standardized processes. Its scale and living conditions make it a central case in debates over food and animal suffering.
Peter Singer: An Australian moral philosopher known for utilitarian arguments about animal suffering and human obligations. His book Animal Liberation brought equal consideration of animal interests into public debate.
Animal rights movement: A social movement seeking recognition and protection of animals’ moral or legal interests. Philosophical arguments have supplied concepts and justifications used by animal-rights campaigns.
Moral status: The degree or kind of moral consideration owed to a being. Debates ask whether animals’ capacities give them moral standing and what follows from it.
Welfarism: An approach that permits animal use while seeking to reduce suffering and improve treatment. Welfarism contrasts with abolitionist views by accepting some human uses of animals.
Animal testing: The use of nonhuman animals in experiments, research, or product-safety testing. It raises questions about scientific benefit, alternatives, consent, and permissible harm.
Tom Regan: An American philosopher who argued that many animals are subjects-of-a-life with inherent value. His rights-based account challenges approaches that permit sacrificing individuals for aggregate benefits.
Vegetarianism: A dietary practice that excludes meat, though definitions differ about other animal products. Ethical objections to killing animals have motivated vegetarian choices and public arguments.
