Antarctic Treaty

A 1959 international agreement that reserves Antarctica for peaceful purposes, promotes scientific cooperation, and freezes competing territorial claims without settling them.

Antarctic Treaty System: The network of agreements and measures that governs Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. The treaty is the system’s foundation, supplemented by later agreements and decisions.
International Geophysical Year: A coordinated international scientific campaign conducted from July 1957 through December 1958. Its Antarctic research cooperation demonstrated that rival states could work together on the continent.
