Antigonid dynasty

The Antigonid dynasty was a Macedonian royal house that ruled Macedon for much of the Hellenistic period, from 276 to 168 BCE.

Antigonus I Monophthalmus: A Macedonian general who founded the Antigonid dynasty and sought to reunite Alexander the Great’s empire. His family’s claim to Macedon began with his posthumous legacy.
Demetrius I Poliorcetes: A Hellenistic king and military commander, son of Antigonus I Monophthalmus and father of Antigonus II Gonatas. His campaigns and descendants carried the family’s royal ambitions into Macedon.
Macedonian phalanx: A dense infantry formation armed with long pikes called sarissas, developed in Macedon and used by Hellenistic armies. Antigonid kings relied on phalanx infantry as the core of their field armies.
First Macedonian War: A conflict from 214 to 205 BCE between Philip V of Macedon and Rome, fought alongside the Second Punic War. It began the prolonged Roman-Antigonid rivalry without immediately ending Macedonian independence.
Wars of the Diadochi: A series of conflicts among Alexander the Great’s successors over control of his empire. These wars created the kingdoms from which the Antigonid monarchy arose.
Philip V of Macedon: An Antigonid king of Macedon who ruled from 221 to 179 BCE and fought Rome in the First and Second Macedonian Wars. His reign brought the dynasty into sustained conflict with the expanding Roman Republic.
League of Corinth: A federation of Greek states established by Philip II of Macedon in 337 BCE under Macedonian leadership. Antigonid rulers revived the league to extend Macedonian influence over Greece.
Second Macedonian War: A war from 200 to 197 BCE in which Rome and its Greek allies defeated Philip V of Macedon. Its outcome curtailed Philip’s power and weakened Antigonid influence in Greece.
Antigonus II Gonatas: A Macedonian king who established lasting Antigonid rule over Macedon in the third century BCE. His victory at Lysimachia in 277 BCE secured the dynasty’s Macedonian kingdom.
Perseus of Macedon: The last Antigonid king of Macedon, defeated by Rome at Pydna in 168 BCE. His capture marked the end of Antigonid kingship in Macedon.
