Macedonian Wars

The Macedonian Wars were a series of conflicts between Rome and the Antigonid kingdom of Macedon from 214 to 148 BCE. They ended Antigonid rule and brought Macedon under Roman control.

First Macedonian War: A conflict between Rome and Philip V of Macedon, fought from 214 to 205 BCE alongside the Second Punic War. The first Roman-Macedonian conflict began when Philip V allied with Hannibal.
Treaty of Phoenice: The 205 BCE treaty that ended the First Macedonian War between Rome and Philip V. Its terms closed the initial conflict without settling Rome and Macedon’s rivalry.
Philip V of Macedon: An Antigonid king of Macedon who ruled from 221 to 179 BCE and fought Rome in the first two Macedonian Wars. His alliance with Hannibal and later resistance drew Rome into repeated wars.
Antigonid dynasty: A Hellenistic royal house that ruled Macedon from the late fourth century to 168 BCE. Its kingship supplied the political framework for Rome’s principal Macedonian rival.

Second Punic War: A war between Rome and Carthage from 218 to 201 BCE, fought largely under Hannibal’s command. Rome’s struggle with Carthage shaped its response to Philip V’s alliance.
Achaean War: Rome’s 146 BCE war against the Achaean League, ending with the destruction of Corinth. It followed Macedon’s subjugation and completed Rome’s military defeat of organized Greek resistance.
