Apollo 16

Apollo 16 was NASA’s fifth crewed lunar landing mission, conducted in April 1972. Its astronauts explored the Descartes Highlands, collected lunar samples, and conducted experiments on the Moon.

John Young: John Young was an American astronaut who commanded Apollo 16 and later walked on the Moon. He commanded the mission and joined Charles Duke in lunar surface operations.
Apollo command and service module: The Apollo command and service module carried crews to lunar orbit and returned them to Earth. Mattingly operated this spacecraft while Young and Duke descended to the surface.
Apollo program: The Apollo program was NASA’s effort to land astronauts on the Moon and return them safely to Earth. Apollo 16 was one of the program’s crewed lunar landing missions.
Lunar geology: Lunar geology studies the Moon’s materials, structures, history, and processes. Apollo 16 samples and field observations provided evidence about highland geology.
Apollo 13: Apollo 13 was a crewed lunar mission aborted after an oxygen tank explosion damaged its service module. Unlike Apollo 16, it never landed on the Moon.
Charles Duke: Charles Duke is an American astronaut who served as Apollo 16 lunar module pilot. He explored the Descartes Highlands alongside John Young.
Apollo Lunar Module: The Apollo Lunar Module was a two-stage spacecraft designed to carry astronauts between lunar orbit and the Moon’s surface. Its descent stage landed in the highlands, and its ascent stage returned the crew to orbit.
Apollo 15: Apollo 15 was the fourth crewed lunar landing mission and the first to use the Lunar Roving Vehicle. Its success established the extended surface exploration approach Apollo 16 continued.
Lunar sample: A lunar sample is material collected from the Moon, including rocks, soil, or core material. Apollo 16 returned about 96 kilograms of samples for laboratory study.
Apollo 11: Apollo 11 was the first crewed mission to land astronauts on the Moon, in July 1969. Apollo 16 followed it as a later mission with a different landing region and scientific aims.
