Apophatic theology

Apophatic theology approaches God by denying that ordinary concepts and predicates apply adequately. It treats divine transcendence as exceeding what language can affirm.

Via negativa: A theological path that approaches God through negation rather than positive description. This is the central method apophatic theology uses to unsettle claims about divine attributes.
Plotinus: A third-century Greek philosopher whose account of the One profoundly influenced later theology. His transcendent One became a major philosophical precedent for speaking beyond ordinary attributes.
Divine simplicity: The doctrine that God is not composed of parts or distinct properties. It challenges the assumption that divine attributes function as separable features.
Natural theology: Reasoning about God's existence or attributes from nature and human reason rather than revelation alone. Its arguments infer positive claims that apophatic theology treats with caution.
Cataphatic theology: Theological speech that describes God through positive names, images, and attributes. It supplies the affirmations that apophatic theology qualifies or eventually negates.
Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite: An anonymous late fifth- or early sixth-century Christian author of influential mystical and theological works. His writings systematized divine negation and shaped Christian apophatic theology.
Divine transcendence: The idea that God exceeds the created order and is not contained within it. Apophatic theology grounds its limits on language in God's transcendence.
Scholasticism: A medieval method of theological and philosophical inquiry using structured questions, arguments, and distinctions. Its precise definitions contrast with apophatic suspicion of conceptual mastery.
Divine names: Names and titles used to speak about God, such as goodness, wisdom, and being. Apophatic interpretation asks how far these names can truthfully describe God.
The Mystical Theology: A short treatise by Pseudo-Dionysius describing ascent toward God through progressively deeper negation. It is the classic statement of the method later called apophatic theology.
