Nontheism

Nontheism is a position or tradition that does not affirm belief in a personal creator god. It includes atheistic views and religious traditions that do not center on such a god.

Atheism: Atheism is the absence of belief in gods or the belief that no gods exist. Some nontheistic positions are atheistic, but nontheism also includes religious traditions.
Buddhism: Buddhism is a religious and philosophical tradition based on teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama. Many Buddhist traditions center liberation and practice rather than a creator god.
God: God is a supreme or ultimate divine being or reality in many religious traditions. The meaning of “personal creator god” depends on what counts as God.
Religious atheism: Religious atheism combines religious practices or identity with the absence of belief in gods. It illustrates how atheism and religion can coexist within nontheism.
Agnosticism: Agnosticism holds that the existence of gods is unknown or unknowable. It concerns knowledge, while nontheism concerns whether belief in a personal creator god is affirmed.
Jainism: Jainism is an Indian religion emphasizing nonviolence, ascetic discipline, and liberation from rebirth. Its cosmology and path to liberation do not depend on a creator god.
Belief: Belief is acceptance that a proposition is true or likely true. Nontheism concerns what a person or tradition does not affirm as belief.
Secularism: Secularism is the principle that religion should not control public institutions or political authority. Nontheism describes belief; secularism concerns religion’s place in public life.
Theism: Theism is belief in at least one god. It contrasts with nontheism’s refusal to affirm a personal creator god.
Confucianism: Confucianism is an ethical and ritual tradition shaped by the teachings of Confucius. Its central concerns are moral cultivation and social relationships, not creator worship.
