Arauco War

The Arauco War was a prolonged conflict between Spanish colonial forces and the Mapuche people in Chile, beginning in the 16th century and continuing through changing phases into the 19th century.

Battle of Curalaba: A 1598 Mapuche victory in which forces led by Pelantaru killed Governor Martín García Óñez de Loyola. Its outcome triggered a major Spanish retreat from settlements south of the Biobío River.
