Aromatic compound

An organic compound containing a cyclic, conjugated electron system stabilized by delocalized π electrons. Many aromatic compounds satisfy Hückel’s rule, having 4n+2 π electrons in the relevant ring.

Conjugation: The continuous overlap of adjacent p orbitals that permits π electrons to spread across multiple atoms. Aromaticity requires an uninterrupted pathway for π-electron delocalization.
Aromatic stabilization: The energetic lowering associated with cyclic electron delocalization in an aromatic system. This stabilization is the energetic feature that distinguishes aromatic rings from comparable nonaromatic systems.
Benzene: A six-carbon ring with six delocalized π electrons and equivalent carbon–carbon bonds. Benzene is the standard example of a neutral, monocyclic aromatic compound.
Aromatic hydrocarbon: A hydrocarbon containing one or more aromatic rings. This major subclass includes industrially important compounds such as benzene and naphthalene.
Nonaromatic compound: A compound whose cyclic or conjugated structure lacks the electronic conditions for aromatic stabilization. It provides the baseline for distinguishing aromatic rings from ordinary cyclic conjugated molecules.
Hückel's rule: A rule predicting aromatic stabilization in planar monocyclic conjugated systems with 4n+2 π electrons. It supplies the familiar electron-count test for many aromatic rings.
Resonance: A way to represent a molecule using multiple Lewis structures that differ only in electron placement. Resonance structures depict delocalization, though none alone represents an aromatic molecule's actual structure.
Naphthalene: A fused-ring hydrocarbon composed of two joined benzene-like rings and ten π electrons. Its fused rings illustrate aromaticity extending across a larger carbon framework.
Heteroaromatic compound: An aromatic compound whose ring contains at least one heteroatom, such as nitrogen, oxygen, or sulfur. Heteroaromatic rings are common in pharmaceuticals and biological molecules.
Antiaromatic compound: A planar cyclic conjugated compound with 4n π electrons and destabilizing electron delocalization. It exhibits the opposite energetic effect from an aromatic compound.
