Askia Muhammad I

Askia Muhammad I ruled the Songhai Empire from 1493 to 1528, expanding its territory and strengthening Islamic institutions and administration.

Songhai Empire: A West African empire centered on the middle Niger River, dominant in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Askia Muhammad made this empire a major power through conquest and administrative reform.
Songhai administration: The system of central officials, provinces, and appointed governors used to govern the Songhai Empire. Askia Muhammad strengthened central oversight while retaining regional administration.
Muhammad al-Maghili: A North African Muslim scholar and jurist who traveled in the western Sudan in the late fifteenth century. Traditions associate his advice with Askia Muhammad’s Islamic reforms.
Timbuktu: A historic West African city on the Niger River’s inland trade routes and a center of Islamic learning. Its scholars and commercial networks flourished under Songhai rule.
Sunni Ali: The Songhai ruler who expanded the empire from 1464 to 1492. His death created the succession crisis that Askia Muhammad exploited.
Songhai military: The armed forces that defended and expanded the Songhai Empire. Military campaigns extended the territory governed from Gao.
Askia Dawud: A Songhai ruler who succeeded Askia Muhammad and reigned from 1549 to 1582. His later reign continued the Askia dynasty founded by Muhammad.
Sankore Madrasah: A major center of Islamic study in Timbuktu, associated with the city’s mosque and scholarly community. It represents the intellectual institutions supported by Songhai’s Muslim rulers.
Battle of Anfao: A 1493 battle in which Muhammad Ture defeated Sunni Baru for control of Songhai. This victory secured the throne and began Askia Muhammad’s reign.
Qadi: A judge empowered to apply Islamic law in a Muslim community. Askia Muhammad appointed Muslim judges as part of his legal administration.
