Asphalt binder : A petroleum-derived or modified bituminous material that binds aggregate particles and gives asphalt mixtures cohesion. It coats and binds the aggregate, while its temperature-sensitive behavior shapes pavement performance.
Asphalt compaction : The densification of an asphalt mixture by rolling or other mechanical effort, usually while it is hot and workable. Compaction sets the final density and air-void content of a newly placed surface.
Hot mix asphalt : An asphalt paving mixture produced and placed at elevated temperatures so binder coats aggregate and the mixture can be compacted. It is the common form of asphalt concrete used for durable, heavily trafficked pavements.
Portland cement concrete : A composite construction material in which Portland cement paste binds aggregates into a hardened mass. It is the principal rigid-pavement alternative, with different curing, jointing, and load-distribution behavior.
Asphalt recycling : The recovery and reuse of asphalt pavement materials in new paving or other construction applications. Recycling reclaimed pavement can reduce demand for virgin aggregate and asphalt binder.
Mineral aggregate : Crushed stone, gravel, sand, or mineral filler used as the granular skeleton of a construction material. Its size, shape, and gradation form the load-bearing framework of the pavement.
Viscoelasticity : The time- and temperature-dependent combination of elastic and viscous behavior in a material. Asphalt binder makes pavement respond differently to slow, warm loading than to rapid, cold loading.
Warm mix asphalt : Asphalt mixture produced and placed at lower temperatures than conventional hot mix using additives or foaming techniques. It aims to preserve asphalt-concrete performance while reducing production and placement temperatures.
Chip seal : A road surface treatment made by applying asphalt binder and covering it with aggregate chips. Unlike asphalt concrete, it is a thin treatment rather than a compacted aggregate-and-binder mixture.
Reclaimed asphalt pavement : Processed material recovered from existing asphalt pavement, containing aggregate and aged asphalt binder. Its binder and aggregate can be incorporated into new asphalt-concrete mixtures.
