Athenian Empire

The network of Greek communities dominated by Athens during the fifth century BCE, initially organized as an alliance against Persia and increasingly governed as an empire.

Delian League: An alliance of Greek communities founded in 478 BCE to continue the war against Persia. The empire grew from this alliance as Athens took control of its treasury and decisions.
Greco-Persian Wars: A series of conflicts in which Greek states resisted invasions and later campaigns by the Persian Empire. The Persian threat prompted Greek communities to form the alliance Athens later dominated.
Pericles: An Athenian statesman who led the city during much of the fifth century BCE and supported its political and cultural power. His leadership coincided with the empire’s height and its use of allied resources for Athenian building.
Peloponnesian War: A war from 431 to 404 BCE between Athens and its allies and the Spartan-led coalition. Conflict with Sparta destroyed Athenian dominance and ended the empire.
Phoros: The regular tribute paid by members of the Delian League to fund its common military effort. Athens used the payments to maintain its fleet and finance projects under its control.
Battle of Salamis: A naval battle in 480 BCE in which a Greek fleet defeated the Persian navy near Salamis. Athens’ contribution to this victory strengthened its claim to lead the postwar maritime coalition.
Thucydides: An Athenian historian who wrote an account of the Peloponnesian War and analyzed the growth of Athenian power. His history preserves a major ancient interpretation of how Athenian power provoked Spartan fear.
Mytilenean Revolt: A revolt by Mytilene on Lesbos against Athens in 428–427 BCE, followed by a debate over punishment. The Athenian response exposed the tension between imperial deterrence and restraint.
Athenian Navy: The fleet of warships maintained by Athens and its allies, centered on triremes. Naval superiority let Athens enforce tribute and suppress revolts across the Aegean.
Pausanias: A Spartan commander who led Greek forces against Persia before being recalled amid accusations of authoritarian conduct. His removal helped transfer allied confidence and command from Sparta to Athens.
